What is CESR and Portfolio Pathway?
CESR stands for Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration, and Portfolio Pathway is a new term introduced by the General Medical Council (GMC) to describe the process of applying for CESR or CEGPR (Certificate of Eligibility for General Practice Registration). From 30 November 2023, doctors applying for specialist or GP registration via CESR or CEGPR will need to provide evidence that they have the knowledge, skills and experience required to practise as a specialist or GP in the UK. This is the new standard in the legislation which will come into effect on this date. The current standard, in contrast, requires applicants to demonstrate how their knowledge or training are ‘equivalent’ to Certificate of Completion of training (CCT). This important change will give the GMC more flexibility to accept a broader range of evidence from applicants. It will also make the application process less burdensome as the volume of evidence doctors need to provide will be more proportionate.
